Instrumental Music on Chapman Stick® and Loops

The music of Glenn Poorman is a blend of new age, rock, progressive, electronic and ambient music. The Stick alone provides a full range of music but, with the addition of live loops, it's hard to believe that so much music is coming from just one person. Since early 2001, Glenn has performed to very receptive audiences all over Detroit, Ann Arbor and Traverse City sharing the stage with such notable performers as ex-Dave Matthews collaborator Greg Howard, Windham Hill bassist Michael Manring, the California Guitar Trio and legendary King Crimson and Peter Gabriel bassist and Stickist Tony Levin.

About Glenn
Glenn has been a musician for over 30 years. Originally trained in saxophone and piano, Glenn began playing the guitar and bass in 1980. While playing in several Detroit area bands, Glenn also did a fair amount of writing and recording in his home studio playing guitar, bass, keyboards, saxophone, and doing all of his own rhythm programming. While still rooted in rock, Glenn's recordings took a lot of influence from contemporary jazz, progressive rock and even movie soundtracks. In October of 1999, Glenn began studying the Chapman Stick. Feeling like he'd finally discovered the "right" instrument for him, he has since devoted almost all of his practice time to the Stick and has studied with some of the top players in the world including Greg Howard, Bob Culbertson, Jim Lampi, Steve Adelson and Emmett Chapman.

About the Chapman Stick
The Stick is an electric fretboard tapping instrument invented by Emmett Chapman and put into production in 1974. The instrument has the full range of a guitar and bass in one package and is played by simply tapping on the fretboard. Without the need to use the other hand for picking or strumming, the Stick player can tap with both hands playing both bass and melody lines simultaneously like a pianist.

About the Demo Tunes

The Sky Over Scherzer
Recorded August of 2007 at the Firefly Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is a live performance using Stick, live looping and drum machine.

Sunday in Salt Spring
Also recorded at the Firefly Club in 2007, this piece shows the clean sound of the Stick and live loops.

A Thousand Words
From the debut self-titled CD of Glenn's studio project 121normal, this is the unmastered version of the piece performed using Alto Stick and loops.

The Wailing of the Damned
One of Glenn's favorite things to do both in practice and performance is to fire up his looping device, pick a key and improvise. This recording captures one of those moments. The entirety of the piece is an improvised solo performance using Stick and loops recorded at Glenn's home studio during a practice session in 2003. The piece was later arranged and re-recorded for the 121normal CD.
